WELCOME TO THE EDGEWOOD PRESERVE EVENTS PAGE
STOP THE LITRIM INTERMODAL: TAKE ACTION BELOW!!!
PRIVATE BIKE TOURS AND HIKES AVAILABLE - Contact us via E-mail!!!
There was no major action to transfer the land in 2013. We still feel that the land should be preserved, and will try to come up with a new plan in the near future.
Bills in 2012 were listed as A3836 in the Assembly, and the Senate version easily passed a floor vote...
EDGEWOOD PRESERVE ACTION ITEMS:

A Dix Hills man mysteriously vanished last spring. His car was located at the Deer Park Train Station, adjacent to the east side
of the Edgewood preserve. We were told he occasionally rode his green mountain bicycle at the preserve (also missing) so if you have any knowledge of his whereabouts,
or find a green bicycle at or near the preserve or train station, please contact the police ASAP. We have no reason to believe that the preserve
is a factor in this case and there have been several search parties. We recently rode 12 miles to look again now that the
foliage is thinner, but found nothing. But we encourage everyone to keep an eye open for anything unusual. More info on the
details of the missing person is at this site helpfindrobertmayer.com
PLEASE WRITE A LETTER OR SEND AN E-MAIL TO GOVERNOR CUOMO, E-mail is at Governor's mail form
SAMPLE Letter:
December 2013
The Honorable Andrew Cuomo
New York State Governor
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224
Dear Governor Cuomo,
I support the transfer of the surplus Pilgrim state property being considered for an ill-advised intermodal, which will
permanently protect the Edgewood-Oak Brush Plain State Preserve from further development, according to Chapter 635 of the
Laws of 1987, which created the preserve. This action will save open space in an area of Long Island that is severely
overdeveloped and suffering from air, noise and light pollution. More importantly, this legislation will ensure the
sustainability of Long Island's supply of clean drinking water and will satisfy the requirements of the 1987 Sole Source
Aquifer Act, which limits development within the Deep Flow Recharge Area. The Edgewood-Oak Brush Plain State Preserve is
part of the State Nature and Historic Preserve (Sec 4, Article XIV of the State Constitution) and is the largest parcel
of open space west of Brookhaven and the second largest remnant of pitch-pine scrub oak habitat in New York State. It is
an irreplaceable and fragile ecosystem that is home to a wide variety of migratory birds and other wildlife. The preserve
and adjacent lands provide prime nesting for plant and animal species that are on New York State's Endangered, Threatened,
and Special Concern lists. Furthermore, the preserve and adjacent lands are part of a Special Groundwater Protection Area,
a major source of drinking water for both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Please transfer these lands to the preserve at the
earliest possible opportunity.
Thank You.
